Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to describe the outcomes of health education and communication (HEC) activities for inpatients and examine influencing factors at the University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2023.
Methods: The study employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Results: A quantitative study of 100 inpatients revealed the following HEC information reception rates. Before admission: all patients (100%) received information on hospital fees, health insurance, and their rights and obligations; 96% were informed of hospital, departmental, and ward regulations; and 81% were instructed on the use of departmental facilities. During hospitalization, 100% of patients received information regarding their disease, procedures, medications, treatment plan, prognosis, nutrition and hygiene, and rehabilitation. Prior to discharge, 100% of patients were informed about hospital bill settlement, prescriptions, discharge date and time, treatment outcomes, post-discharge health care, and follow-up schedules. Overall, 98% of patients felt that the duration of counseling was adequate for their needs. Factors facilitating health education and communication included facilities, financial resources, and the policy environment, whereas the main barrier was human resources.
Conclusion: It is necessary to develop additional policies and allocate more human resources to support these initiatives. Furthermore, improvements should be made to the hospital website’s interface and functionalities to facilitate better access to information for both patients and the general public.
