Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics and to determine the gene mutation rates of female lung cancer patients at Hanoi Medical University Hospital.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 66 female lung cancer patients who were tested for genetic alterations at Hanoi Medical University Hospital.
Results: average age 64.4 ± 10.0 years. The proportion of non-smokers was 98.5%. The main clinical symptoms were dry cough (40.9%) and thoracic pain (37.9%). The most common tumor location on CT scan was upper lobe of the right lung (33.3%). Tumors > 3cm accounted for 57.6% of cases, the stage IV disease 75.8%. Most patients had a histopathological result of adenocarcinoma (97.0%). Gene mutations were found in 77.8% of patients, with the most common being the EGFR gene mutation (71.2%), HER2 gene mutation (13.6%). Other mutations accounted for smaller proportions: ALK gene fusion (6.1%), KRAS gene mutation (1.5%), and ROS-1 gene mutation (1.5%). An association between age and EGFR mutation status was observed in the study.
Conclusion: The main symptoms for female lung cancer patients are a dry cough and thoracic pain, the common histopathology is adenocarcinoma, and the majority are diagnosed at a late stage. A large proportion of female lung cancer patients have gene mutations, most frequently the EGFR gene mutation.
