Abstract

Objective: To evaluate patient experience during the use of preoperative carbohydrate therapy at the Urological Surgery Department , Bach Mai Hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 100 elective surgical patients who received preoperative carbohydrate therapy according to the ERAS protocol. Patient experience was assessed across multiple dimensions, including physical symptoms (hunger, thirst, dry mouth), tolerability, preoperative anxiety, satisfaction level, and compliance.

Results: The mean scores for hunger, thirst, and dry mouth were low. A total of 92.0% of patients experienced no nausea or vomiting. The mean preoperative anxiety score was 35.6 ± 6.8, with 68.0% of patients classified as having low or normal anxiety, indicating relatively stable psychological status before surgery. However, 22.0% of patients had moderate anxiety and 10.0% had severe anxiety, suggesting that a considerable proportion of patients still experienced significant preoperative anxiety and required additional attention in preoperative care. Overall satisfaction was high (86.0%), and compliance with the therapy reached 94.0%.

Conclusion: Preoperative carbohydrate therapy is safe, feasible, and significantly improves the preoperative experience of surgical patients.
